Richard & Alice Kolisnyk Memorial Bench
at
Kildonan Park Winnipeg, Manitoba

Memorial bench plaque honouring Richard & Alice Kolisnyk
Treaty 1 Territory Land Acknowledgement
Recognizing traditional lands of the Anishinabe (Ojibway),
Ininew (Cree), Oji-Cree, Dene, and Dakota,
and the heartland of the Métis people.
Our water is sourced from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.
It is an honour to have a memorial adjacent to memorials
for Chief Peguis and Tommy Prince.
This bench was erected June 15, 2023,
17 years after Richard's service,
Looking directly in the pavilion windows,
Where his children read eulogies to him,
And to Alice, family and friends.
"Take time to stop and smell the roses."
Dad always said to
"Stop and smell the roses" and
Mom always exclaimed "I never had time".
Yet she lived beyond 101 years!
Dad and Mom brought us here often,
For picnics in the summer, and in winter,
To skate on the frozen pond and
Toboggan or sled on the snowy slopes,
Down onto the frozen creek.
When you sit on the bench,
You are several metres from
The Ten Commandments, inscribed
On a large granite rock monument.
Commandment 6: Honor thy father and thy mother.
Dad's nickname was Rocky, and
The Ten Commandments echo the essence,
Of our upbringing and societal relationships
with love and without prejudice to other beings.
So, the bench is ever more aptly located.
Take time to stop and smell the roses,
Watch lovers, family and friends skate and sled,
Watch geese guard and care for their goslings,
As Dad and Mom did for their little ones.
Live and love ourselves and one another,
As they did, and as we all should.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep."
The last verse of the above prose was by Robert Frost.
The integrity of Richard and Alice and their progeny
is well known to countless friends and family.
Like all caring, intelligent, and educated people,
they believe in peace, environmental protection, justice, and
respect the rights and privileges of other beings and people,
including other races, indigenous, and 2SLGBTQ+ peoples."

"HERO"

A battle he should have not lost
Exceptional courage and strength he showed
Alas his body and heart slowed

Our hero and knight in shining armor
We miss you so much,
our hearts are filled with sorrow
You have taught us all
so much
from beginning to end
You now lead the path
so we can all meet again
Rest peacefully "Daddio"
